Altran Engineering Academy: Finalists are announced

German concept starts with a high-pressure fuel injection

Something’s happening in Formula 1: improved fuel injectors, more efficient braking systems, lower air resistance or better weight distribution – innovative concepts such as these ensured a place in the final round for the ten finalists in this year’s Altran Engineering Academy (AEA) competition. To be honest, any of the concepts presented for the coveted internship with the Renault F1 Racing Team could have won a prize. But there can only be two winners. The Altran Engineering Academy jury really will be spoilt for choice in the final elimination round. All of the finalists will receive an official steel F1 Team Pilot watch as a «consolation prize».

This year’s German finalist is Sebastian Jörs from Cologne. The 27-year-old is currently studying automotive engineering at Cologne’s University of Applied Sciences. He previously trained as a motor mechanic at Mercedes-Benz in Fulda. Jörs said of the competition: “Altran Engineering Academy is a huge challenge – but an even bigger opportunity.” His concept focuses on improved fuel injection systems.

This enthusiasm for the AEA is also shared by the other competitors: Albert Illera Lopez, 21, is competing for Spain with a concept for improving rear spoilers and sees this competition as his big chance: “The Altran Engineering Academy is the big chance for young engineers from all over the world who want to become F1 engineers.” Brazil’s Felipe Borges confirms this: “The AEA is an excellent opportunity for young engineers to realise their ideas which need some investment.”

A six-month internship beckons for the two future winners, either at the chassis development facility in Enstone, UK, or at the engine development centre inViry-Châtillon(France). The internship package includes a salary, free accommodation and a company car with inclusive fuel card. The winner will be announced on 13 July in Enstone, UK.
