AIT - Automotive, Infrastructure and Transports

The automotive industry – figurehead of the German economy

Did you know?

In many industrial countries the automotive industry is one of the major industrial sectors. Particularly in Germany, with about 40%, it clearly contributes the lion’s share of the overall research and development costs of the German economy.

However, the industry is undergoing a change and must adjust to new technologies and changing customer requirements. New concerns are exerting pressure on established car manufacturers, the combustion engine sees competition from alternative drives, and new markets are opening up.

Altran supports its clients in its unit  Automotive, Infrastructure & Transport (AIT), starting from the development of new technologies up to implementing management tools to optimise business processes.

Project

Project management for serial development of initial run of a system for automated switch-off and restart of a combustion engine in vehicles with automatic and manual transmissions.

Context & objectives

  • Project management
  • Coordination of control device function integration (HW and SW) of different development units within the enterprise
  • Optimisation of overall system within series development process
  • Requirements management, test and validation of the complete system

Functional & technical environment

  • Utilisation of milestone-trend analysis, implementation planning and alignment
  • System analysis, simulation, CAN and Flexray measurements, error tracing with HP quality center, requirements and change management with DOORS

Approach & solution

  • Identification of all project participants (stakeholder analysis)
  • Analysis of existing development process and addition of necessary process stages
  • Agreement on performance interfaces with relevant stakeholders
  • Coordination of joint procedures for validation of the highly interconnected functions with the participating interface partners
  • Overall vehicle analysis and vehicle test with various measuring techniques, e.g. CAN and Flexray tracing, OBD analysis, etc.
  • Virtual system analysis by means of active chains and simulations
  • Simulation of the most important impact parameters to assess cost-down potentials at an early stage

Results & added value

  • Model process is also applicable to other highly interconnected functions
  • Virtual validation allows for prediction of the impact of cost-down measures on the whole function network
  • Improved safeguarding chains result in a stable development process with functional maturity being achieved at an earlier stage
  • First cost-down loop is already effective at initial start-up
  • Faster development cycles for further development projects
  • New development projects can be implemented with fewer resources by means of the optimised process
  • All impact parameters for comfort, technical improvements as well as costs of the overall function exist and can be further optimised

Context & objectives

  • Project management
  • Increase of benefit for customers compared with conventional remaining range computing function
  • Innovative algorithmics with involvement of predictive information

Functional & technical environment

  • Requirements management, project management
  • Model based software development, MiL test environment, diagnostic tools, CAN tools, validation and verification

Approach & solution

  • Requirements analysis & concept development
  • Project-, budget-, resources- and release planning
  • Management, organisation and moderation of market internal and external coordination discussions
  • Preparation of various specification documents
  • Drafting the model architecture, function development and modelling in target link complying with the style directives of the OEM
  • Control of the function verification
  • Promoting implementation of the own brand in the software department and with the supplier
  • Test and safeguard planning
  • Functions validation
  • Issue of release recommendation

Results & added value

  • Timely function – developed, coordinated and supervised from conception up to approval for series production
  • Development of innovations in the field of e-mobility for the OEM
  • Integration of the function into the model series on schedule
